Today I had an interesting conversation with a client about taxonomy. They have a client who is having trouble with their information flows and are trying to work out why. After discussing their problems for 10 mins I suggested that it could be that they don’t have a common language or vocabulary which means that there is a mis-match in the information flow within their client.
My advice to them was to interview (via a workshop) the staff and find out the words they use to describe activities they do and then map the common language.
Common language within any organisation is very important because it allows for easy flow of information, for easier conversations and ultimately a unified approach to meeting goals.
